We are excited to share the latest updates on our ongoing tree-planting efforts in the north of Senegal, along the beautiful Senegal River, approximately 250 km from St. Louis. This year, Naturefriends Senegal (ASAN) is committed to enhancing the greenery and sustainability of three villages—Dimat, Doué, and Loboudou—that have previously benefited from our reforestation projects. Additionally, they will initiate the first tree-planting project in the village of Dado.
These four villages form the geographical and cultural entity known as Touldé Dimat. In these areas, the aim is to reforest about 3,500 fruit trees with the active involvement of local populations. The mission is not just about planting trees; it’s about fostering a deep-rooted connection between the community and their environment and raising awareness of the importance of trees for human life.
Engaging the Community: Workshops and Environmental Education
To ensure a good future, we believe in the power of education. This year, ASAN will organise workshops in various schools that will feature both theoretical and practical components. The goal is to instil eco-responsible attitudes in children from a young age, helping them understand their crucial role in preserving their ecosystems. By the end of these sessions, they will be able to share their insights and practices with their families and communities, acting as vital links in spreading environmental awareness.
Reaching Out to All Generations
The initiative is designed to reach as many people as possible, focussing on young people, and women. Over the course of two days in each village, the ASAN project team will engage with the community to raise awareness about the climate crisis and explore local adaptation techniques to mitigate its negative impacts.
Timing and Logistics
The natural environment of the project area presents significant challenges, particularly during the rainy season when access becomes difficult. Considering this and the school calendar, the activities are scheduled to commence in mid-October, right after the start of the school year. This timing allows to work in harmony with school administrations, ensuring that the workshops are both effective and well-integrated into the students’ education.
