July, 2026 | Mali
On 25 July 2026, Naturefriends Mali (2ADIB-MALI) held a fruit tree planting activity in the framework of the current Climate Fund project at Daellan school, located in a village approximately 22 kilometres from San. The activity brought together school principals, teachers, students, community leaders and representatives of Naturefriends Mali, united by a shared commitment to protecting the environment and building a more climate-resilient future.
PROJEKT
REPORT
During the event, participants highlighted the urgent need to take action against climate change and emphasised the important role fruit trees can play in improving the local environment, strengthening food security and raising awareness of climate issues among younger generations. By involving schools and local communities, the initiative helps children understand the importance of caring for nature and encourages collective action for a more sustainable future.
More than planting trees: ensuring their survival
As part of the latest planting campaign, 123 fruit trees, including orange and mango trees, were planted at Daellan school. In addition, 15 replacement trees were planted in Diaramana and another 50 in Finkolo to replace saplings that had not survived after previous planting activities.
These replacement plantings reflect an essential principle of the Naturefriends Climate Fund: success is not measured solely by the number of trees planted, but by their long-term survival and the benefits they bring to local communities.
The project has faced several challenges, including losses during transportation, damage caused by termites and animals, and the difficulties of ensuring regular monitoring and maintenance under local conditions. These experiences have provided valuable lessons and strengthened the team’s determination to improve planting methods, protection measures, and follow-up care.
Caring for trees and communities
The work does not end with the planting activities. Until December, the Naturefriends Mali team will continue to monitor the young trees closely, replace losses with saplings from the Farako Nursery, and strengthen protection and maintenance measures. The aim is to significantly improve the survival rate and ensure that the trees can grow and provide lasting benefits.
Through these efforts, the project contributes not only to environmental restoration and climate resilience but also to food security and environmental education. Each year, hundreds of children learn about the importance of protecting nature, while schools and communities gradually benefit from the fruit trees planted in their surroundings.
Growing a future together
The Naturefriends Climate Fund supports community-led initiatives that strengthen climate resilience and promote climate justice in Africa. The experience in Mali demonstrates both the challenges of restoring nature under difficult conditions and the importance of long-term commitment, local involvement and continuous learning.
We sincerely thank all our supporters, school communities, and local partners who make this work possible.
Together, we are planting more than trees: we are nurturing knowledge, strengthening communities, and growing hope for future generations.
